Rubberduck Bathrooms Guide To Traditional Bathrooms

31 Aug 2017, 1:52 PM

Traditional bathrooms are back in fashion. Traditional styled bathrooms have a feel of an old manor house from the Victorian or Edwardian era and screams style, class and sophistication. If you are deciding on having a traditional bathroom the most important thing is to stick to the theme and not mix modern style bathroom products in with traditional. We hope the below information will help you achieve your dream of a traditional bathroom.

Bath

So let’s start with the biggest item in the bathroom and often seen as the centre piece to a traditional bathroom, the bath. To really keep with an old-style bathroom theme, a freestanding claw feet bath or a slipper bath is the obvious choice, but cannot be always be practical or fit the space within your bathroom. Although it will be the main focal point in your bathroom, really the space you have available will dictate whether you can have a stand-alone bath.

If you don’t have the space for a freestanding bath don’t worry, using a standard bath and using a shaker style bath panel and traditional style bath taps will make the bath appear traditional. We recommend Burlington Bath Taps which combine traditional style with modern valves and quality.

Toilet and Cistern

For the ultimate in traditional styling, a high level cistern toilet is a must complete with chrome pipework and a pull chain will give a feature to any traditional bathroom. High level toilets are not to be confused with comfort height or raised height toilets. High level purely means that the cistern is installed at a high level on the wall. If you are looking for a comfort raised high toilet you may consider the Burlington Regal Range of toilets which have the same traditional look but with raised height pans.

Traditional High Level Toilet

High level toilets are not always practical with many modern homes having the toilet situated under a window, but a low level toilet will give a similar effect.

Low Level Toilet

Selecting a cistern with a flush handle instead of a push button will finish the look. Burlington Toilets have all the style of a traditional Edwardian or Victorian bathroom but are installed with the latest in modern cistern technology offering dual flush and water saving option but still keeping the traditional style.

Basin and Pedestal

Bathrooms need a basin, traditional bathrooms were always fitted with a basin on a pedestal or on a chrome wash stand. When using a chrome wash stand a chrome trap and pipework is a must.

Old bathrooms didn’t have storage units in the bathroom but todays demand for toiletries has seen a rise in demand for bathroom storage. Burlington bathrooms offer a range of traditional bathroom vanity units which fit perfectly with a traditional bathroom theme.

Taps & Brassware

Taps and brassware are very important when it comes to setting the theme. Traditional style basin taps and bath taps can make even a modern bath or basin look traditional. The tap or taps you choose will depend on the basin you have chosen and if you require a monoblock tap (single tap hole basin) or a pair of taps for a two tap hole basin. Burlington bathroom taps offer a range of different taps handles, Claremont, Birkenhead, Anglesey and Kensington to help you customise the look and feel of your bathroom even further and also offer a regal extension to raise the height of your taps to give them extra prowess. Dont forget to add a plug and chain for the extra traditional look.

Showers

Bathrooms in the olden days didn’t have showers, but todays lifestyle requires showering. Fortunately there are a range of traditional style showers with large bell style shower heads and exposed chrome pipework. The Burlington Trent Shower is one of the market leaders in traditional showers.

Radiators

Keep your radiators traditional with a cast iron looking style radiator. These can be combined with a heated towel rail for extra function. These are traditional in appearance and does not mean that they aren’t as effective in heating your entire room as a modern radiator would.

Pipe Work

Traditional bathrooms often had pipe work exposed and not hidden away or concealed like we do today. Where possible leave pipework exposed and use chrome pipes to add extra style.

Walls

Victorian and Edwardian bathrooms were often tiled with a small 200mm x 100mm tile, often known as a metro or subway tile. These tiles are called this due to their use in subways(London Underground)  and metro stations build in the Victorian Era. These tiles were mass produced for the underground construction and tiles found their way into society. To give your bathroom that traditional style, metro or subways tiles are a must.

Flooring

Bathroom floors in the Victorian era were often wooden with flooring later becoming tiled in the Edwardian era. So choosing a wooden style flooring, a wood effect floor tile, or a traditional style tile like a Devonstone tile will give the floor that traditional style look and feel.
